As Life as Normal Resumes, Put Your Best Face Forward with a Range of Eyelid Surgery to Facelift and Neck Lift Options, at Springs Aesthetics!

By Dana Corddry

Summer is in the air, and after a long cold winter of wearing Covid masks, we’re taking our first few steps toward resuming our normal lives. One perk of picking up where we left off? Cosmetic treatments! The cosmetics industry experienced a notable surge in demand as Covid case numbers began to decline, with many clients requesting appointments months in advance for a facelift, neck lift, blepharoplasty, eyelid surgery, and more. As the masks come off, and Zoom continues to be the most frequently used mode of communication for those still working from home, many are making the life enhancing choice to self-care by indulging in both surgical and non-surgical treatment options alike, to boost their self-confidence as we head into the Summer season.

“I feel like my friends haven’t seen me in practically a year!” Says Louise M. of Colorado Springs, CO. “Now that we can finally get together again, I want to look amazing!” Louise recently opted for an eyelid surgery (medical term: Blepharoplasty to treat her droopy eyelids, as well as the MyEllevate® procedure, a minimally invasive option that delivers immediate results that mimic a neck lift without requiring the downtime, here at Springs Aesthetics, a plastic surgery and medical spa, in Colorado Springs.

“I knew absolutely nothing about what a Blepharoplasty was,” says Louise, “I could hardly pronounce it – but I am so pleased with my results. When I look in the mirror now, I feel relieved that I finally did something about my droopy eyelids, they’d bothered me for years”.

Blepharoplasty

Many patients like Louise try many skincare solutions or topical products first to address the signs of aging, and ultimately, when these products just don’t do the job, they seek out a qualified plastic surgeon and come to us at Springs Aesthetics. Dr. John Burroughs, a graduate of the highly selective F. Edward Hebert School of Medicine at The Uniformed Services University in Maryland, and Founder of Springs Aesthetics, says that he often sees patients who have tried everything, and spent thousands of dollars, before deciding they want to see a plastic surgeon. “Typically, after everything is said and done, the feedback I hear most often is: ‘I just wish I’d done this years ago,’” says Burroughs, whose clients have most recently been opting for non-invasive facelifts or neck lift procedures such as MyEllevate, and the Blepharoplasty procedure that his client Louise selected.

A blepharoplasty is an eyelid surgery that tightens and/or removes the tissue of the upper and lower eyelid. “A Blepharoplasty is something that I recommend for patients wanting to remove or reduce excess loose skin or visible bags around the eyes,” Dr. Burroughs explains. An eyelid surgery can tighten skin, visibly reducing the appearance and existence of droopy eyelids, a frequent complaint of Burroughs’ middle-aged clients. “Facelifts are a specialty of mine, so we get a lot of clients who travel here from all over the country for a facelift or a neck lift,” he notes, “MyEllevate is a great option to be able to offer my clients who may want to address their neck, but who may not have the time for a long recovery.”

Kyra, another local Colorado Springs resident, raves about Dr. Burroughs and Springs Aesthetics. “I’ve been behind this [covid] mask for a long time. I have a lot of friends who haven’t been doing as much upkeep, and people are getting more lax about wearing makeup to work, etc., but for me, I just feel better when I take care of myself in that way. I received the MyEllevate procedure from Dr. Burroughs at Springs Aesthetics and fixing my neck has given me that pep in my step”. Kyra says that receiving the MyEllevate procedure at Springs Aesthetics gave her an edge on looking her best, when all the masks come off. “I’m using this time to my advantage – give me all the treatments I can get, until these masks come off!” Kyra says.

Wrinkle Blocker Injections To Give A Pleasant & Gentle Smile Even At Rest

Dr. John Burroughs has been injecting wrinkle blockers for over 20 years and wrinkle fillers since 2004.  He is a recognized expert having published articles and textbook chapters on these subjects.  He is also a frequent invited speaker to teach on these subjects at national and international symposia.

The botulinum toxins we use for cosmetic purposes are made by multiple companies and have long track records for safety and efficacy.

One of the uses many are not aware of is that wrinkle blockers can improve the appearance of the lips by creating a gentle upturn to the outer corners of the lips.  The top photo was before her depressor angularis oris had been injected on each side (2-4 units/side).  The below photo shows the gentle upturn to the outer corner of the lips giving a nice gentle smile even at rest.  Having a gentle smile at rest can help others receive us in a better manner.  A smile can be disarming when meeting new people or having to engage in a difficult conversation or during conflict.  This lady loved her results.  These injections need to be repeated every 3-4 months.

Dangers of Getting Skin Treatments by Unlicensed Technicians

Dangers of Getting Skin Treatments by Unlicensed Technicians

What are some of the dangers of getting skin treatments by unlicensed providers/technicians

Receiving skin treatments by unlicensed and improperly trained providers could result in suboptimal results, burns, skin discoloration, eye injuries, improper post care instructions and product, and inadequate guidance on maintenance treatment at home to optimize and maintain the results.  At Springs Aesthetics, we train all our staff on skincare, and only offer quality science-backed products.

What are common side effects of black market beauty treatments?

Suboptimal results, no results, skin injury, burns, prolonged redness, pigment discoloration, risky skincare products with harmful chemicals

How can you be sure you’re seeing a licensed doctor? How should one go about investigating a practitioner before scheduling an appointment?

Medical spas should be directed by a licensed physician.  You could check with the local medical association or medical board of the state to check that they are legitimate to practice.  Check online reviews for their reputation.  Just because a spa has a medical director does not mean that they have received training for skincare or are very knowledgeable about skin.  The core aesthetic specialties of plastic surgeons, dermatologist, facial, and oculofacial plastic surgeons are the most well trained and appropriate to medically direct a spa.

Antihistamines and Sebum Production

Can antihistamines block sebum production? Yes, antihistamines work on the h1 receptor, which has been found in sebocytes. Taking of oral antihistamines can impact sebum production by decreasing it. This can lead to drier skin, but can be helpful for skin-types susceptible to inflammatory acne from excess sebum production.

Clean Beauty

What is clean beauty and why is it so important?

Clean beauty is a movement to have skincare products that are absent of toxic substances and more heavily based on natural products to help out skin.  The practice of being able to know and read beauty product labels to know what you are putting on your skin is a lofty goal.  Unfortunately, the beauty product industry has very little regulation making standardization or adherence to common standards difficult to enforce.

What are the most important things to know when decoding the back of labels? This is a debatable item, since many of the labels or certifications can come from paying a fee to a company to be able to provide the symbol. For example, the recycling symbol. Organic is another area of dubious labeling or assertion. This is unregulated as well, and difficult to enforce. Furthermore, sometimes synthetic is not only safe but in a more bioavailable form than some organic sources (e.g, ascorbic acid).

Are you at risk if your current skin care routine isn’t all natural? What are some skin care ingredients that one should be cautious of? Not necessarily a concern if skincare product isn’t all natural, but its important to buy from a company that backs there results with science and is looking to help your skin and not just profit by using products with dubious qualities and potentially even carcinogenic risks. There are numerous ingredients that can be harmful to include: hydroquinone (can cause permanent skin discoloration and some are co-packaged with mercury; BHA can alter hormone levels and has carcinogenic properties; parabens, which can have estrogen effects; polyethylene/PEGs in scrubs can have carcinogenic properties and readily penetrate the skin; and petroleum distillates, which are fraught with impurities and can cause dermatitis; and oxybenzone commonly found in sunscreens and carry carcinogenic and hormonal risks.

Grapeseed Oil

What are the benefits of grapeseed oil?

Felt to be a potent antioxidant with both omega 3, 6.  Preparation may be done in a harmful manner with solvents or heat that may make into the product or damage the oils purchased by consumers.  It can be rich in vitamins A, C, and E.  It can be topically applied to skin and be helpful for scars, hair growth and quality, and wrinkles.

What are the best ways to incorporate it into a routine? Probably safest to get organic certified grapeseed oil, which may or may not be organic due to regulation issues. It can be applied topically or used for cooking in moderation as it has a higher amount of omega-6, which can be harmful in high amounts.

Butt Facials Before Bikini Season

What does a butt facial entail?

There is no standard butt facial in they go by many names: fanny facial, butt facial, derrier treatment, shiney hiney treatment etc. They can include microdermabrasion and dermal infusion of helpful serums to moisturize the skin or help with acne in the area.  Often after dermabrasion a mask may be applied as well as vitamin C and a massage of the tissue.

What are the benefits, and how popular are they? Popularity is growing with the Kardashian followers that are looking for beautiful bottoms to include shape, firmness, and smoothness of the skin. Also, bikini coverage of the buttocks is becoming less and less causing our bottoms be more exposed than ever. Also selfies of one’s back side (“belfies”) are becoming more popular in the younger generation of women.

How should you prepare for a butt facial? No special preparation, but if you are hairy then shaving can be helpful. Otherwise, a comprehensive butt facial will leave the skin feeling better, more toned, and can be helpful for acne in the area. Your treating provider can also make suggestions to help with cellulite dimpling and stretch marks.

Wrinkle Blocker for Frown Lines

Wrinkle Blocker in Colorado Springs, CO

The botulinum toxins we use for cosmetic purposes are made by multiple companies and have long track records for safety and efficacy.  These include Xeomin, Wrinkle Blocker, and Dysport.  These act similarly with a few clinical differences.  This lady had 24 units of Xeomin injected into her brow frown lines, which are the corrugators, procerus, and depressor superciliaris.  It can even give a gentle “wrinkle blocker” brow lift.  For best results the crows feet need to be addressed (4-16 units per side) also as they pull the lateral brows downward.  Some studies have showed that having the frown lines treated can improve depression and reduce stress.  It also helps others see us in a more positive light as it is harder to look mad at others when one is concentrating or even upset.  Many of Dr. Burroughs patients get their “resting bitch face” treated for this very reason.  They don’t want others thinking they are mad at them even when they are not because of their emotional appearance at rest.  This is how the wrinkle blockers can help beyond just addressing wrinkles as they can actually change ones’ emotional look to a more positive one and make us feel better internally.

Dr. John Burroughs has been injecting wrinkle blockers for over 20 years and wrinkle fillers since 2004.  He is a recognized expert having published articles and textbook chapters on these subjects.  He is also a frequent invited speaker to teach on these subjects at national and international symposia.

Non-Surgical Filler Blepharoplasty and Brow Lift

Non-Surgical Filler Blepharoplasty and Brow Lift

Dr. John Burroughs is a very busy and sought after cosmetic eyelid and facial plastic surgeon.  Some of his patients don’t need or want cosmetic surgery for various reasons.  Eyelid rejuvenation can still be obtained by the use of dermal fillers.  Dr. Burroughs injected this lady’s lower eyelids and lateral brow tissues with Restylane.  This smooths the contours of the lower eyelids and helps them blend more aesthetically with the upper cheek.  This can mask depressions, hollows, and fat bags.

Injection into the upper brow area can lift and enhance the lateral brow providing a beautiful brow position and fullness.  This patient was delighted with her results.  Rarely bruising can occur, but Dr. Burroughs uses a cannula technique to improve the safety and to lessen bruising and discomfort.  He teaches his techniques as in invited speaker at both national/international cosmetic symposia.  Results can last a year to several years.

Dr. Burroughs recommends additional use of topical Hyaluronic Acid intensifier by SkinCeuticals to help maintain the results as this serum boosts hyaluronic acid levels by up to 30%.  Dr. Burroughs sometimes is consulted to manage complications of facial fillers as well as suboptimal results.  This can be done with improved injection techniques, enzyme injections, and rarely surgery.  Additional non-surgical eyelid rejuvenation procedures at Springs Aesthetics include skin resurfacing, chemical peels, wrinkle blockers, radiofrequency skin tightening, and dermal infusion treatments.  Call us at 7109-473-8801 if you want better looking eyes.
