Dr. John Burroughs KOAA Covid 19 Corona Virus Pink Eye Interview, in Colorado Springs
In today’s Your Healthy Family, we’re talking about the connection between Pink Eye and COVID-19, and it’s very important to understand right now, just because you may get a case of Pink Eye that does not by itself mean you have coronavirus
Under most circumstances. No, and the suspicion, when you get these other findings that are much more rare, like the loss of smell or the pink eye with the Covid virus, it’s usually considered to be at risk when you’ve had a higher viral load or you have more of the virus in your system.
Dr. John Burroughs says, associated with coronavirus or not.
Well, pink Eye is a conjunctivitis condition that when it’s infectious is usually due to viruses. The good part about it is that it goes away on its own and it doesn’t really need a treatment. Now, these viral ones can also, under rare circumstances, also have upper respiratory symptoms, such as a sore throat, which can alarm people. Now, there’s other causes of the infectious pink eye, such as bacteria that do need treatment. So it makes patients wonder, what should I do when I have problems like red or pink eye?
Is there a connection that we know of?
Well, IRA, there has been a connection. We don’t know how significant it is, but most of the time what you’re going to see, of course, with the covid infection is the sore throat, the fever, and in the more severe cases, the breathing issues. But interestingly, Chinese ophthalmologist back in December started raising concern because he was treating some patients in the hospital with pink eye type conjunctivitis that also had significant breathing problems. When he raised this concern to the local authorities, he was shut down and told to quit doing this. Sadly, the same Chinese ophthalmologist later died in February from complications of what we now know as the coronavirus, and he was only 32 years of age.
Can it be spread through the tears? What do we know about that?
It can be spread through the tears, but it’s not to a very significant amount. However, we do know that the most common route, of course, is through respiratory droplets. When you cough or you sneeze and then it gets on your hand and you touch other objects.
Pink eye is something Dr. Matt McDonald also treats frequently.
So we’ve known for a long time that pink eye is a virus, so it literally could be any virus that causes it. And I think that’s good to know so that a lot of people that if they get pink eye during this, aren’t really, really scared.
If you do develop what you think might be pink eye right now.
Yeah, so please call an eye doctor. A lot of eye doctors are closed right now to routine eyecare, but we’re still performing emergency eyecare and pink eye would fall under one of those things. The governor issued a statewide support of Telehealth, so we’re doing a lot of things through conferences like you and I are doing right now. FaceTime, anything we can do to try to help take care of the community.
But if the pink eyes accompanied with other symptoms,
Obviously if you’re showing other symptoms, having respiratory problems and some of the other symptoms with COVID-19 and experiencing single pink eye, you should get checked out by a medical doctor.
And if telehealth isn’t an option for you
During this pandemic, you especially need to go to a hospital-based emergency room. If you have any of the symptoms of coronavirus or have been exposed to a known contact or have traveled from other areas with high risk like New York, and with those eye problems at the emergency room, there’ll be an on-call, ophthalmologist that can see you in person. And if you’re having those other symptoms, of course you could be tested and treated in a safe environment.

Dr. John Burroughs & Springs Aesthetics Partnering With Springs Rescue Mission, Colorado Springs
Springs Aesthetics is partnering up with Colorado Springs Rescue Mission to bring warm clothes to the homeless in our community. They want to remind the community as it gets colder and more people are left on the streets, that they do offer specific services to help people get back on their feet.
We are more than a shelter. We feed about 600 people a day. We are sheltering right now. We opened up another hundred beds last night, so we’re actually sheltering 400 people a night. And then we provide clothing too. But more than that, we’re also able to provide them with other services, such as assigning someone to a case manager where they can help them find work, they can help them find housing, and they can help them find the health services that they need. So we’re all about working together with other partner agencies to help transform Lys to get them back on their feet again.
As a proud partner, Dr. Burroughs of the Springs Aesthetics wants to remind everyone whose office is located at 300 Garden of the Gods Road, and that is a drop off location for coats.
Dr. Burroughs On Living Local Describing His Subspecialty & Springs Aesthetics in Colorado Springs
Joining us today is world class surgeon, and he’s from right here in Colorado Springs, one of the top docs in Colorado Springs, nominated for best doctor in the United States. Dr. John Burroughs, owner of Springs Aesthetics joins us today to talk a little bit about what they offer. So you are a plastic surgeon, but you also own a medi spa, so what does that mean?
That’s right, Marie. I’m an eyelid and facial plastic surgeon, so that’s where my main concentration is. And so I do eyelid and facial plastic surgery, everything from forehead lifts to eyelid Ts and lower facial lifts and neck lifts. Our Medical Spa brought in because I have a desire to help all our female and male clients feel their very best. So we offer everything from hair restoration with platelet rich plasma. We have the ThermiVa and the VFI Plus, which helps with feminine wellness. We have laser hair removal, all the usual things like wrinkle blockers, wrinkle fillers, and we also have the silk dermal infusion machine, which will hydrate the skin and help with fine lines and pigment areas.
Wow, okay. So what are some of the surgeries that you then do? Are you just focused on the face?
Yeah, I’m generally just focused on the face. That’s an OAC plastic surgeon is what my designation would be. So I fix things from droopy eyelids to sometimes malposition issues where they’re turned in or turned out not in good contact with the eye, which can cause eye pain and issues like that.
So when someone comes in for plastic surgery, it’s not always just about looks. It’s also sometimes it’s causing them pain.
That’s right. Or cancer reconstruction or trauma dog bites, that kind of thing.
Okay. So what are some things on the MediSpa side that you offer?
Yeah, so we try to cover everything from, like I said, hair treatments. We have laser hair removal for where you have hair you don’t want. We have the body contouring that can be done noninvasively, like the forma and body fx, which will reduce cellulite. And that’s just an in-office procedure. There’s no sedation, no downtime. We do skin tightening that can lift the face and forehead, and that’s got no downtime. We have laser hair removal, as I mentioned, laser resurfacing and the fillers and blockers.
So for me, or maybe some people out there were like, oh my gosh, these things sound really interesting, but I don’t know what they mean. Do you guys have more information on your website?
Yeah, our website has a tremendous amount of information and if you reach out to us by our phone number, we can answer it as well. And I’ve spent a lot of time with the content on our website so that people feel informed before they come in.
And it is a beautiful website, very easy to navigate, which always helps. So can you kind of take me through how a patient would come in for plastic surgery or the medi Spa side? They’re calling to make that consultation first.
If they’re just calling for a cosmetic consult, just call our office up and they’ll give you available times and then you get scheduled for it. And then when you come in, there’s a questionnaire you fill out so I can know what the areas of concern are and address ’em in an efficient manner and try and get all the questions answered before you leave. And many times we try to allow enough time where we can do your treatment that same day. If it’s something simple like wrinkle blocking or putting in filler
And you guys are running some amazing specials, you’re always running some amazing specials. What’s the one you have going on right now?
Yeah, the one we’re really excited about right now is for feminine wellness. And so a lot of women as they age, have problems with stress, urinary leakage, vaginal laxity, dryness, discomfort with intercourse. And so we have an in-office, non-invasive, no downtime treatment called ThermiVa. And that works amazing. And right now it’s 20% off, so it’s at $2,400 and you get a free vfi, which is a $500 value as well. So you’re saving $1,100 if you want to try the vfi. We’re the first in Southern Colorado. It’s an at-home feminine wellness improvement device that works. And that’s for a hundred dollars off right now it’ll be 3 95.
Wow. That is so great. Alright, so like you said, you get a stop on you, get the website, take a look or call that phone number. Do you want to give us that number?
Yeah, (719) 749-3606.
Wonderful. Thank you for your time today.
Thank you as always, Maria.

BodyFx Body Contouring with Dr. Burroughs from Springs Aesthetics in Colorado Springs
Well, I am at Springs Aesthetics with Dr. John Burroughs and we are talking about summertime because you know what, sometimes you’re even in the gym for three, four days a week, hour at a time, and sometimes that stubborn fat just won’t go away. So you have a great solution out there for that stubborn fat for people.
We do, it’s called Body FX and it uses radio frequency heat with a handheld device that has a vacuum. So it pulls the skin up, the fat up, and then it treats it with the heat to permanently destroy it. It also works on the cellulite so it can smooth it. So the advantage to the heat based nonsurgical fat and body contouring is that there’s no downtime and it permanently destroys it and it tightens the skin. So the skin will be smoother, tighter, and smaller. So if you’re working on your thighs or your belly behind the arms like we’re going to do on you or the buttocks, all those areas can be treated nicely.
Okay. So you’re saying that any area in your body can be treated unlike machines that might freeze it? Well, you’re limited to only certain areas.
Well, not everywhere needs to be treated. I mean, the fat accumulation and cellulite accumulation is worse on our bellies, our hips and our thighs, those are the main areas, but other areas that people have concern with or behind the arms or the area on the back, the upper back area where your bra strap or bikini area comes across and it sticks out, and that’s an area you can treat as well, as well as the neck. We have a handpiece for the neck.
Oh, interesting. Okay. So it’s gentle enough for our face, but then also durable enough for our body.
That’s right.
So how would it work? Someone would come in and say, Hey, I want some body effects. Is it consultation first? Can they go right into the treatment?
No, they need to come in to find out what their goals are, and it’s not a substitute for weight loss, but it’s really great for those that have been eating right and exercising, but have trouble areas that they just want to improve further, especially as we head into the summer and go into the pool and everything. So you come in, you have a consult, you find out what areas you want to treat, and then we tell you what we can do. And it’s a 6 to 8 treatment series for the body parts outside of the neck. The neck, you usually only need three to four, and they take about 20 minutes per treatment area to 40 minutes depending on how much area you got to treat.
Okay. So it might be a lunchtime, it might be an afternoon kind of thing. All right.
And it’s generally not uncomfortable. It does get warm, but you keep it moving and it gets up to a temperature so that it’s high enough to kill the fat cells and to kill the cellulite accumulations and to smooth it out and an advantage to it over the cool sculpting. The older technology. Cool. To kill the fat cells is that it’s more contour and customizable so you can get smoother treatment zones and not have step offs or undulations, and it also tightens the skin. The cool based ones don’t tighten the skin, so you don’t want to get rid of fat and then have all this loose lack skin. So this tightens it with it.
Okay. Are you running any specials right now for body effects?
We are. We’re running 20% off if you call within two weeks after this airs.
Well, wonderful. Thank you. I’m excited to try it out. And you’ve got some beautiful before and after pictures with some really happy customers.
We do. People love it.
Wonderful. All right, well let’s give it a try. I think a lot of people are sold out there, but one big thing that is probably on their mind is how much does it cost,
Right? It depends on what area you’re treating. So the back of the arms, like you’re interested, runs 1250 and that covers all six treatments. If you’re doing a larger area like the abdomen and belly fat, that’s 2,500 for the series. But if you add on a second area or a third area, they’re at half off. So say you want to help the buttocks area to tighten and smooth that area in addition to the abdomen, that second zone is at half off.
You’ve got some great deals. So everybody stop on down to Dr. John Burroughs at Springs Aesthetics and check out body effects and Mini FX.
Dr. John R Burroughs from Springs Aesthetics in Colorado Springs doing Fillers on Fox21
Hi everybody. I’m at Springs Aesthetics with Dr. Burroughs, and I was just complaining to him because I’m going to be 32 in May, and I just feel like my face is losing volume, but I’m nervous to entrust my face with just anybody. But you have such an extensive background.
Sure, I get asked that quite a bit. Because injections can cause bruising. They can cause symmetry problems. They can also be risky if they get into a blood vessel and cause skin to have problems, discoloration breakdown or even blindness. So it’s good to go to a qualified provider and injector. And my background is as an oculofacial plastic surgeon. So I operate around the eyes and on the face week in and week out. And I’m used to where the anatomy is, where the vessels are, where the nerves are, and we have techniques to do these very safely with even cannulas, which have a lower risk of getting actually into a blood vessel. So you bring up a good point, and all I do is concentrate around the eyes and the face. So what kinds of concerns do you have as far as what you’re seeing now?
I’m just noticing a lot of volume loss. My face is starting to look a little bit more tired than it used to.
Okay. So if you want to look with the mirror, I can show you what we can do. So what I see a lot as we age is that parts of the fat pads in the face start to deflate and then also sag down. And as that occurs, it can cause the hollows in the dark circles that we get under our eyes. It can cause prominence to the parentheses or nasal labial folds here. People can get the marionette line start to develop jowling here, and then you can also just get areas that are starting to sink in because of that fat atrophy. Furthermore, the brows can descend because of the brow fat pad loses some of its volume, which helps it normally stay up a little bit. And so if you can address those areas of volume deficiency that we see with age by putting filler back in, you can help all of those areas.
And so what I’m hearing from you, Maria, is that you’d like to get the circles under your eyes better and smoother, and that can help with that. We will support your midface here with some filler, and that’ll help reduce the nasal labial fold and give you a nice pretty projection right here. And everybody knows nice cheekbones are a beautiful feature to have. And then another issue that ladies can run into that bothers them is that their lips start to atrophy after about the age of 30. And so we have great fillers that can help accentuate the lip and give that nice plump appearance that you had when you’re just a bit younger. So
I think we should go for it.
Okay. Let’s do it.
All right. So we just finished up. Dr. Boez. Can you kind of take everybody through what you did again?
Sure. So we started out with enhancing her cheekbone area, and then that’s the filler that will help lift the cheeks, give you nice pretty cheekbone structure. It also helps lift the tissues that have been sagging down. It supports the eyelid cheek complex better as well, which makes it smoother, which is a nice, youthful, beautiful look. It also can help with the deep parentheses lines, the nasal labial folds and the marionette lines. We then followed that up with putting in the filler underneath your eyes, the belo tarro. And that lasts about a year to two years, and it helps smooth the contours between your cheek and where it blends with the eyelid gets rid of the hollows and it helps with the darkness. And then we finish things up with your lips and put in Restylane there. And we worked hard to improve the symmetry, so we put more in your left upper and your left lower.
And I think they’re balanced a lot nicer now. And we kept that important proportion. So it looks natural by keeping your upper lip only about 35 to 40% of the size of the lower. And then we put a small amount into the browse there just to enhance that area. It’s a very beautiful feature to have and it can help give that nice beautiful arch that you have already, but it accentuated it. So the cheekbone radius lasts between a year to two years underneath the eyes a year to two years, and then the lips about nine months. So now one thing that can help it last longer, and you get this with the injections, is the SkinCeuticals hyaluronic acid. And it boosts the levels by about 30%. And two of the three fillers we used are hyaluronic acid. So that’s important to use twice a day going forward.
Well, thank you.
Yep. You look beautiful.
Girl. You look good. I I was super worried that I was going to look overdone because he did do a lot of little bits, but I get so swollen after when something happens, I get when people get mosquito bites and it’s just a little reaction. Mine swells up to a giant welt. So yeah, so that’s what I was worried that was going to happen. And I was a little swollen afterwards, but it’s totally normal. Yeah. So did it hurt when they were injecting you? It did a little bit, but they are so kind. They put a topical thing on and then they had injected a little bit of, what is that, lidocaine or something just to numb certain areas. But I would say the lips did hurt a little bit. The rest of it, it was just weird. You could kind of feel like something was there, but it wasn’t like I’m going to cry.
Right. Yeah. And is it super expensive to get done? Well, it depends. So Dr. Burroughs is so wonderful. He works with everybody. You go in for a consultation, you kind of tell him what you don’t like, and then he talks you through what he would suggest you use. And then beyond that, there are different types of filler. There’s kind of a scale. You can go with the really expensive one and then that’ll last you for longer. Or you could go with a cheaper one and then see if you like it. Because usually the cheaper ones don’t last as long. And then you’re not stuck with something permanent. Well, I mean it, that’s not permanent. And so it lasts about how long? Well, the stuff that he put in under the eyes, I think he said would last and by the cheeks would be about one to two years, depending on how Well, because your body will absorb it at different rates. So if your body metabolizes things faster, that wears away faster. But I mean, it lasts longer than Botox. Botox is only three to six
Months, depending on which one. So filler is definitely going to last longer. And if you don’t like it, he can go in and adjust. There’s something you can do. Yeah, it was something to dissolve it so he could do that, go in and dissolve it. So it’s a great alternative to permanent things if someone’s worried you want to get a facelift, but that’s a really intense surgery,
But you just want a little lift. Filler is great. And Dr. Burroughs was so kind because I’m such a big baby. Me too. I was watching you do that. I was like, there’s no way that I can get that done. But you don’t see it. You don’t see the needles going in, so it’s not as freaky. I couldn’t watch the video, but yeah. Well, great. Well, you look great. Thank you. And you did a good job. Yeah. I mean, I don’t feel like I look overdone. You’ll be honest and tell me, yeah, I know. You look great.
Springs Aesthetics's Colorado Springs Eyelid & Facial Plastic Surgeon Dr. John Burroughs
Hi everybody, it’s Maria Parmigiani and I’m at Springs Aesthetics and I’m talking to Dr. John Burroughs who is an expertise in eye surgery. So one of the things that we’re going to talk about today is eyelid surgery. So tell us a little bit about your qualifications and then we’ll get into those questions.
Sure. I’m an ophthalmic plastic surgeon and I’m part of the Asoprs Society, which is the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic Reconstructive Surgeons. And it took 14 years after high school to get through all of that because we have to take separate oral exams, written exams, we have surgical case log reviews, we have to write a thesis and we have to be recommended by the person who’s training us. So my background was originally as an eye surgeon and then I did plastic surgery while I was an eye surgeon and just found out that’s what I love the most and I was encouraged to go on and do the two years of the eyelid and facial plastic surgery fellowship.
You have a lot of training behind you, so one of the things that we’re going to talk about is eyelid surgery. And what would be a reason that someone would come in and get that?
Well, the eyes are the center and the focal point of our face and it’s what we’re taught from a very young age to look at when we talk to others. So people care about their eyes and people get told that they look tired or they look older than they are because it shows in your eyes. So you can help improve things by getting rid of wrinkles, by lifting the eyelids, by getting rid of bags underneath, where if they have dark hollows and circles, we can improve those areas as well. And rarely people need reconstructive surgery because there’s a problem going on or a skin cancer in the eyelid.
Alright. So what are the types of surgeries that we can get on the eyes?
Oh sure. Well you can lift them, you can lower ’em if you need to. Sometimes they’re rolled out and you roll ’em in. If they’re rolled in you can roll ’em out. There’s also surgery to get rid of the fat bags and we sometimes take fat out. Sometimes we move the fat around and then there’s DP eye lid repairs we do as well as brows surgery.
Alright, well your eyes, a lot of people get nervous around their eyes. So what are the types of fears that most patients have when they come in?
Well, one of the big ones is anything going to happen to my eyes. And so with my background as an ophthalmic surgeon, we’re taught millimeters matter. So we were very obsessive about doing surgery safely around the eyes. Another concern they have is how long they’re going to be down as far as bruising and swelling. And so we’ve come up with some ways to improve that to include
Are these goggles? Yeah,
The lid goggles here. I think I’m the first in Colorado to offer these. A colleague in front of mine designed ’em. They have this special foam, but basically you wear these after surgery instead of doing cold compresses and it reduces your bruising and swelling about fivefold. And we’re seeing patients at their first week checkups with hardly any bruising or swelling. It’s amazing. Wow. I also, ’em patients can sleep with them on at night, so if they roll over onto a side, it protects the incisions while they’re healing.
Oh my gosh. All right. And one thing that you had mentioned at the beginning of this interview was aspers. So what are the qualifications of that?
Well, you first have to be a board-certified ophthalmologist and then you apply to do the fellowship training for the eyelid and facial plastic portion. Each of the fellowships have a sanction preceptor that you train with and you got to compete against a lot of other people because it’s a popular field. And then you go ahead and do the two years of training. And then, like I said, they’re separate written and oral exams afterwards.
Oh my goodness. All right. So a lot of qualifications. I think you’re the guy for the job. How can people come down and visit you?
Well, they just can look us up on the web. It Springs Aesthetics. They can also give us a call for an appointment if it’s a cosmetic or aesthetic, if it’s through insurance, they need to have a referral first.
And one great thing that you provide out there for everybody is you’ll film some of your surgeries so they can see it and kind that fear could dissipate a little bit because you see it’s not as scary as you thought or something as long as some would think. Right.
Yeah, that’s right. I have one surgery I filmed that has like 130,000 views. I can’t believe it’s got that many. But I teach at national and international meetings and I have a following of other surgeons as well as patients who just like to see what we’re doing here.
And what’s your Facebook page?

Very easy. Alright. It’s very simple. Well, I want to thank you for your time today. Sure.
