If you want to address fine lines, wrinkles, folds, and other imperfections on the face without plastic surgery, consider affordable and effective solutions like Botox injections. Botox has been used for many years to address dynamic wrinkles on the face and continues to be the first line of defense against the signs of aging. With simple injections done in minutes at Springs Aesthetics, our patients can reverse these imperfections and improve their overall appearance while reversing imperfections on the skin that might contribute to a more aged appearance. Below are just a couple of the more commonly asked questions about Botox injections heard by our team at Springs Aesthetics in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Dr. John Burroughs of Springs Aesthetics describes Botox as a neuromodulator. Neuromodulators are injected into the muscles of the face to temporarily immobilize them and reduce wrinkles. Botox is a brand name for the botulinum toxin, produced by Clostridium botulinum. This neurotoxin blocks the signals between nerves and muscles, leading to muscle relaxation. Other FDA-approved botulinums are Xeomin, Dysport, and Jeuveau.
Botox injections are most commonly used to smooth out wrinkles on the upper part of the face, such as forehead lines, crow’s feet (around the eyes), and frown lines (between eyebrows). Botox injections can also improve one’s facial appearance and emotional appearance (anger, fatigue, etc.). Botox can help gently lift areas of the face, including the brows and jaw lines. However, they can also be used for other purposes, such as jaw tension caused by teeth grinding or reducing excessive sweating.
The lasting effects of Botox injections vary greatly from patient to patient, but on average, the results usually last about three to four months. Some of our patients might experience longer or shorter effects depending on factors such as metabolism, dose injected, and the strength of their facial muscles.
Botox injections should generally be given no more frequently than every three months. Repeated treatments are usually needed to maintain the final, desired results. It is best to follow Dr. Burroughs’ recommendations for the best timing of future injections.
Dr. John Burroughs and our Nurse Injector, Melissa Burroughs, have a combined 35 years of Botox experience (1997 and 2018, respectively). Dr. Burroughs has written textbook chapters, published on the use of botulinum, and teaches other injectors his techniques at national and international cosmetic conferences. Optimal botulinum injections (“wrinkle blockers”) require detailed anatomy knowledge, artistic appreciation, and technical proficiency.
Like any medical treatment, Botox injections have potential side effects. These can include temporary bruising, redness, pain at the injection site, and headache. More rare side-effects include unwanted eyelid or facial area drooping and dry eye. It is best to consult with our team at Springs Aesthetics before undergoing treatment to discuss the pros and cons of this treatment.
