How our Erbium YAG laser treatment provides skin resurfacing and rejuvenation

Do you desire smooth, radiant, and youthful-looking skin? Are you looking for an affordable and effective way to achieve a glow-up? At Springs Aesthetics of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Dr. John R. Burroughs and his team are committed to offering a wide array of skin care treatments designed for patients of all skin types and ages. This includes the Erbium YAG laser skin resurfacing treatment. Let’s see what common questions our team hears about this and other skincare treatments available at the office!

What exactly is the Erbium YAG laser treatment?

Dr. John R. Burroughs describes the Erbium YAG laser treatment as a minimally invasive procedure that uses high-energy light beams to target and remove damaged skin cells. This treatment is specifically designed to improve the overall texture and appearance of the skin, helping to reduce concerns such as fine lines, wrinkles, age spots, sun damage, and other common signs of aging.

How does the Erbium YAG laser treatment work?

This laser device delivers pulses of light energy to the targeted areas of the skin. The laser targets water in the skin tissue.  These pulses heat up and vaporize the damaged skin cells, prompting the body’s natural healing process to kick in. As new collagen fibers are produced, they repair and rejuvenate the skin from within, resulting in smoother, firmer, and more youthful-looking skin!

What can Erbium Yag laser treat?

This laser can treat sun damaged skin, uneven skin pigment, fine to moderate lines and wrinkles, birth marks or benign skin neoplasms, and can improve areas of scarring (acne, chickenpox).

Who is considered a proper candidate for the Erbium YAG laser treatment?

When patients are considering treatment with our team at Springs Aesthetics, we invite them to request a consultation visit and initial examination with our doctor and his staff to determine candidacy. During this first appointment, our team assesses the patient’s skin type, medical history, and cosmetic goals to determine if Erbium YAG laser treatment is the right choice for them.

Generally, erbium YAG laser treatment is most effective for individuals with fair or light skin tones and concerns such as fine lines and wrinkles, sun damage, age spots, or scarring. This is because darker skin tones may be more prone to developing hyperpigmentation or discoloration after treatment. Generally, the Erbium laser can still be used but cautiously on skin types up to fitzpatrick 3 or 4.  Our team at Springs Aesthetics uses advanced technology, protocols, and techniques to customize treatments for each individual patient based on their unique needs and skin type.

Who should not get Erbium YAG laser?

Anyone, with unrealistic expectations regarding results or for potential social downtime secondary to unsightly peeling or swelling should not have this laser treatment.  Further, erbium YAG laser treatments should not be performed on individuals with a tendency towards keloid or hypertrophic scar formation.  Certain conditions such as scleroderma or severe burn injuries with reduced normal skin structures (sweat glands, hair follicles) carry higher risk for complications and/or prolonged healing.  Those with a history of ionizing radiation is also a contraindication.

What can I expect during my upcoming laser treatment appointment?

When you arrive for your first treatment, our team calibrates the laser device to your specific skin type and needs. Topical anesthetic is applied for about 45 minutes before the treatment begins.  Generally, no nerve blocks or tumescent anesthetic is required.  Pro-Nox laughing gas may be used to help those that are more anxious or if they need the treatment to be even more comfortable.  You are also given protective eyewear to wear during the treatment. This laser device is gently moved over the targeted areas of your skin, delivering very controlled pulses of light. You might feel a warm or prickling sensation, but most of our patients report minimal discomfort during the procedure. We also offer post-treatment care instructions to ensure optimal results and minimize any risks of potential side effects.

Does it take long to heal after Erbium laser?

Generally the healing is much quicker than fractionated CO2, but some peeling changes may be noted up to a week afterwards.  You will be provided treatment instructions and product to help achieve the best and safest results.  Following these instructions and followup is critical to your results and to minimize the risk of complications (scarring, pigmentary changes etc.).
