Dr. Burroughs grew up in Colorado Springs and graduated from Air Academy High School. He then graduated with honors from the University of Texas. He completed his medical degree in 1993 at the highly selective Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (F. Edward Hebert School of Medicine) in Maryland on a full Air Force scholarship.
His follow-on transitional internship was surgically concentrated and was followed by an ophthalmology residency in San Antonio, Texas. He served as a Chief Resident and as an instructor at the School of Aerospace Medicine. His skills and abilities in ophthalmic plastic surgery were recognized early in his training, and he was encouraged by his professors to seek subspecialty oculoplastic surgery training. In addition to his ophthalmic training, he received plastic surgery training from ophthalmic, ENT, and Facial Plastic surgeons in cosmetic and reconstructive surgery.
Between 1999-2004, he practiced in Florida as Chief of Ophthalmology and Assistant Professor of Surgery at Eglin, AFB. Owing to his extensive oculoplastics experience, he became the military oculoplastics referral source for the multi-state region.
In 2004, he received a meritorious service medal and honorable discharge from the USAF. He then completed a highly selective two-year American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic Surgery fellowship in Facial and Ophthalmic Plastic Surgery in Salt Lake City, Utah. He trained under Richard L. Anderson, one of the most respected oculoplastic surgeons in the world and a pioneer in the development of the subspecialty of Oculofacial Plastic Surgery.
He served as Chief of Oculoplastics and Orbital Surgery at the Salt Lake VA Hospital and as an Adjunct Professor of Ophthalmology for the University of Utah. Dr. Burroughs was heavily recruited by numerous academic centers and his Utah practice enticed him to permanently join, but he instead returned to Colorado Springs in 2006. Since being back in Colorado, he was appointed an adjunct professor for Rocky Vista University Osteopathic Medical School.
Dr. Burroughs is a life-long learner, and continues to both learn from others and teach them as well. His dad was an academic university engineering professor, and his step-dad a physician. They instilled a passionate drive to constantly be learning and becoming better.
Dr. Burroughs wanted to master the art of oculoplastic surgery. He has truly become a specialist in the eyelids, orbits, and face. Dr. Burroughs has treated tens of thousands of patients, and he is a “doctor’s doctor,” frequently requested by other physicians and nurses to perform surgery on themselves or their family members. He has performed thousands of periocular and facial procedures and surgeries.
He has 20 years of botulinum neuromodulator (“Wrinkle Blocker”) experience, and he also offers at the Springs Aesthetics Medspa non-surgical facial rejuvenation treatments with dermal fillers, chemical peels, fractionated resurfacing, skin tightening, cellulite reduction, photofacials, laser hair removal, and feminine rejuvenation.
Dr. Burroughs is often asked to lecture upon, write, and review professional publications on topics of eyelid, facial rejuvenation, and reconstruction. He is frequently consulted, by other surgeons, to repair complications arising from surgery performed around the eyes. He performs over 1000 surgical procedures on over 600 patients annually.
Dr. Burroughs is on the invited faculty of several national and international cosmetic surgery meetings. Internationally, he has taught in Brazil, Mexico, and multiple Caribbean islands. He is among a few select oculofacial plastic surgeons teaching other plastic surgeons and cosmetic dermatologists both on eyelid surgery and periocular cosmetic treatments such as the “filler blepharoplasty” and “filler sculpting.” He is also a key opinion leader for Inmode aesthetic technologies.
Artistry & Compassion
Dr. Burroughs has come from a family of artists including his brother, a professional illustration artist and former Disney feature animation illustrator. His mother was a painter, and had a keen eye for fashion apparel and professional makeup consulting. His dad is an accomplished academician but also as recreational carpenter. His daughter is studying Art and Graphic design at Baylor University. She has been described by her uncle as far superior to his illustration skills at a much younger age.
Dr. Burroughs loves art and aesthetics whether in the outdoors, created works, or amongst his patients. He sees his practice as a vocation to serve others as a surgeon, but to also help them look better and physically and emotionally feel better. He has an aesthetic eye, and strives for the greatest possible cosmetic outcomes for all his surgeries to include reconstructive. Many of his patients have thanked him over the years for his artistry as a plastic surgeon. He has humbly been gifted by postop patients, who are gifted artists of various disciplines, many works of art they have created. One is nationally known presidential portrait painter with her works displayed at the capital building in Washington, D.C. Another has been a hugely successful graphic designer of items sold throughout retail stores and on gift cards throughout the U.S. Dr. Burroughs loves to help others look their best and feel the best whenever possible. This is sometimes through procedures or surgery, but oftentimes complemented or on their own just by a warm smile, handshake, hug, or a kind word.
