Dr. John Burroughs practices ophthalmic plastic surgery in Colorado Springs. This patient has on her right lower eyelid the malposition called cicatricial ectropion. She had prior plastic surgery by a different plastic surgeon and too much skin was removed under her right eye causing the right lower eyelid to turn outward and become red. Prior surgery had been tried to correct this problem, but it had persisted prompting this patient’s eye doctor to refer her to Dr. Burroughs. Other causes of cicatricial ectropion include skin burns, prior surgery, and sun-damaged skin. This can be a challenging situation to address and oftentimes potentially unsightly skin grafting can be required. This patient wanted to try a conservative approach, and avoid a skin graft if possible. After careful discussion it was determined to try and repair her lateral canthal angle and support her eyelid/cheek junction with a skin muscle flap. Her bottom picture shows her postoperative result. She has been very pleased and happy that her eye feels and looks better. if not repaired this situation can lead to eye pain, redness, scarring, and infections.
