“I believe I’m one of the most well-trained in the whole state, and I care deeply about the experiences my patients have in terms of feeling respected, valued, and listened to. There are many good, qualified surgeons, but I try to deliver a higher level of customer service in the sense that I strive not only for great results, but an equally great experience so patients will feel better about themselves and feel better that they came to me.”

While most everyone knows what plastic surgery is, how many of us have heard of ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgery? Whether you have or not, it is as important as any other kind of plastic surgery, and it is the specialty of Dr. John Burroughs at Springs Aesthetics in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Specifically, Dr. Burroughs’ areas of expertise include cosmetic rejuvenation and reconstructive management of complex issues of the eyelids, orbits, and face. Beyond that, her performs liposuction and has 20 years of experience with injectables. Springs Aesthetics also offers non-surgical rejuvenation treatments with dermal fillers, chemical peels, skin tightening, non-surgical face/neck lifts, cellulite reduction, photofacials, laser hair removal, vaginal treatments, and platelet rich plasma treatment.

Dr. Burroughs says he always had an interest in the sciences but he didn’t want to work in a lab. “I wanted to interact with people and be able to help them. I decided on a career in medicine when I was only 15. I completed an eye surgery residency because I enjoyed the specialty, but the plastics staff training me recommended I take on plastics full-time, saying they recognized the gift I had. So, I completed two more years of fellowship training on eyelid and facial plastic surgery.”

He completed his medical degree in 1993 at the highly selective Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (F. Edward Hebert School of Medicine) in Maryland on a full Air Force scholarship. His follow-on transitional internship was surgically concentrated and was followed by an ophthalmology residency in San Antonio, Texas. Since then he has enjoyed a very distinguished career that ultimately led him back to Colorado Springs, where Dr. Burroughs began his private practice in 2006. He also continues to teach serving as an adjunct professor for Rocky Vista University Osteopathic Medical School and as an invited speaker for national and international plastic and cosmetic surgery symposia.

Professionally, Dr. Burroughs receives the most joy through his happy patients and in owning his own practice. “I was glad to serve our country as an Air Force surgeon, but I don’t enjoy being an employee as much as I do running a business and practice the way I think is best—best for patients and best for care—and where it allows me to infuse my DNA and what I care about into what I do. Having your own practice lets you do that.”

Dr. Burroughs, a recipient of numerous honors, awards and commendations, believes there are good reasons his practice stands out from others: “I believe I’m one of the most well-trained in the whole state, and I care deeply about the experiences my patients have in terms of feeling respected, valued, and listened to. There are many good, qualified surgeons, but I try to deliver a higher level of customer service in the sense that I strive not only for great results, but an equally great experience so patients will feel better about themselves and feel better that they came to me.”

One testament to Dr. Burroughs’ ability is that he is a “doctor’s doctor,” frequently requested by other physicians and nurses to perform surgery on themselves or their family members. He has been selected for many years to “Best Doctors” a national and anonymous peer-chosen selection of the nation’s top 4% of physicians. Additionally, he is frequently consulted by other surgeons to repair complications arising from surgery. He performs over 1000 surgical procedures on over 600 patients annually. Dr. Burroughs is also often asked to lecture, write, and review professional publications on topics of eyelid, facial rejuvenation, and reconstruction.

Patient satisfaction is of primary importance to Dr. Burroughs and his staff, and they strive to make patients feel cared for served. “We create an environment where my patients feel glad they came in. Often times, they will tell us they don’t just feel like a number when they come; from the way we speak on the phone, to the way they’re treated at their appointment. They tell us they don’t feel rushed and we always provide them enough time and opportunities to fully address their questions and concerns. In fact, we even provide a Patient Concierge to address any later questions they may have. My patients feel they are cared about as a person, whether they choose services with us or not. We always want them to leave feeling better that they consulted with us. We are a big “word-of-mouth” built-up practice and spa. Therefore, everyday we’re focused to deliver a high level of customer service. I care not just about the results, but the experience and process of how we got the result.” “Many of our patients return for other services or even to just drop by and say hello because they both like us and coming in.”

Dr. Burroughs is passionate about using his talent to help people. “I love the artistry of reshaping eyelids and faces that have become aged. I love being able to offer surgery, and the non-surgical modalities like wrinkle-blockers, fillers and other non-invasive technologies that we’ve selected.” “I’ve carefully researched all of our equipment and technologies. There’s a big need to rejuvenate all kinds of concerns, but not everyone wants to have surgery, or the timing for it may not be right. So being able to offer non-invasive technologies that provide nice, if not outstanding, results is great. They have many aesthetic rejuvenation choices with us and I’m proud of that.”

One of those technologies is ThermiVa®, something used in the Medspa portion of his practice and has become a popular application for women. Vulvovaginal changes may happen through all stages of life. These changes may affect the way you feel about yourself and your confidence. But with ThermiVa, there may be a way to help you feel better about yourself. ThermiVa is a non-invasive application that uses controlled radiofrequency energy to gently heat vulvovaginal tissue to stimulate collagen production and can be used on both internal and external vaginal tissues.   The application is non-hormonal, and non-ablative, resulting in no destruction of tissue, only gentle heating and requires no anesthesia. While patient results may vary, ThermiVa results in little to no discomfort and no downtime. These applications are conveniently performed in-office and delivered at your comfort level with a conveniently shaped hand-piece for gentle application. Feel empowered to start the intimate conversation and find out why so many women are talking about ThermiVa. Empower a new you today!

Many of his patients are seeking to address female concerns and he believes this was a great option. “I chose the Thermi platform because I think it had the best results, greatest safety, least downtime, and the best backing from the company.”

Board-certified and a fellow of the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic Reconstructive Surgeons, Dr. Burroughs says there are certain things that should be considered when a patient is contemplating surgery or certain procedures: “You need to ask about how it’s going to work, if there’s pain involved, and what to expect during healing. You need to what you will actually be going through during and after treatment. You want to be assured that the practice performing your procedure or surgery is technically competent to do so, and that they are going to be with you if any adverse event occurs. These situations can happen, even when things are done right, so, you need to know that your provider or surgeon is going to help you through anything that might occur.” Dr. Burroughs provides his cell number to all his surgical patients as he believes he is the best suited to help his patients if after hour emergencies or concerns occur.

Having a realistic expectation is also important, he says: “Sometimes I have to send patients away because either I don’t have the skillset they need or their expectations may be beyond what I or anyone else can deliver. It’s part of my job to delicately and gently tell them that they’re not a suitable candidate. I’d rather them hear it from me than for them to pay for a service they’re not going to be happy with. They don’t always like hearing that, but I think it’s an ethical responsibility to address if they’re not a good candidate for a certain procedure or surgery.”
