Dr. John Burroughs initially completed an ophthalmology residency prior to subspecializing in oculofacial plastic surgery. Both recreational and medicinal marijuana have been legalized in Colorado. Since the early 70’s ophthalmologists have known that marijuana can reduce elevated eye pressure, a cause of glaucoma. However, the effect is only for 3-4 hours and no meaningful medical studies have shown marijuana to alter the unfortunate course of glaucoma that can lead to blindness. Whereas FDA-approved medications and surgical procedures have been scientifically shown to slow the disease process and improve quality of life regarding glaucoma patients. Medications have side-effects, but so too does Marijuana including increased risk for cancer and eye diseases.
