Under Eye Filler Injections: Benefits and Expectations

Under eye dermal filler injections can be an amazing way to improve the appearance of hollows, circles, bags, and wrinkles. They can also lessen unwanted darkening of the skin. Only hyaluronic acid fillers should be used under the eye since they can be enzymatically reversed with hyaluronidase.

Benefits of using hyaluronic acid filler injections under the eyes

1. Natural-appearing results.  Filler injections can produce natural appearing results without surgical incisions or surgery downtime. These hyaluronic acid “sugar” gel formulas are generally very safe and compatible with our bodies since they mimic the hyaluronic acid in our skin. Without the stretched or artificial look that occasionally results from other treatments, this results in smoother skin that looks younger.
2. Long-lasting effects. One of the greatest benefits of under eye filler is that it can be long-lasting (generally 9-24 months or longer, unlike some cosmetic treatments requiring frequent touch-ups. This means fewer trips to the office and less maintenance overall, making it a convenient option for those with busy schedules.
3. Versatile treatment options. Several dermal fillers can be appropriate to use under the eyes.  Belotero, Restylane®-L, Restylane®-Eyelight, and Juvederm Volbella are several examples that have been used with success under the eyes.  They can indirectly improve the appearance of under-eye bags by lifting and supporting the under eyelid skin. This versatility allows customized treatment plans tailored to individual needs and desired results.  However, not every version of a filler approved for other areas of the face is appropriate under the eyes.  Juvederm Ultra, for example, is too water-absorbing, causing severe lower eyelid and upper cheek swelling (festoons).
4. Quick and easy procedure. With highly experienced injectors, like Dr. Burroughs and our Nurse Injector Melissa Burroughs, injections for under-eye wrinkles and bags are typically quick and relatively painless, and are generally accomplished with just a single office visit. The injection process takes a few minutes, and our patients usually resume their daily activities immediately after treatment.  We utilize a large-bore cannula technique to lessen the risk of intravascular injection that could lead to skin necrosis or even vision loss or blindness. Neither Dr. Burroughs nor Melissa Burroughs have encountered any severe complications from intravascular injection of dermal filler especially into the under eye areas.
5. Long-lasting results. One of the primary benefits of under-eye filler to improve wrinkles and bags is its long-lasting effects. Depending on the specific product used and individual factors, results last anywhere from nine months to two years or longer. This means fewer appointments and touch-ups compared to other treatments.
6. Minimal downtime. Unlike more invasive procedures such as surgery, filler injections under the eyes generally have no significant downtime or recovery period. Patients often return to their normal daily routines immediately, making them a convenient option for busy schedules.

What is a filler blepharoplasty?

A filler blepharoplasty is when hyaluronic acid filler is injected under the eyelid skin or brow tissues.  It can be used to fill in hollows, minimize the appearance of fat bags, smooth the lower eyelid skin, improve upper eyelid contour defects (“A-frame”), and enhance and gently lift the brow tissue.   Dr. Burroughs only advises hyaluronic acid since it can be shaped if the area swells too much or is reversed.

Can all fillers be used around the eyes?

No.  Only hyaluronic acid fillers and some hyaluronic acid fillers are more suitable around the eyes owing to their underlying water-absorbing properties and type of cross-linking.  Volumizers such as Radiesse, Scultra, and Bellafil can cause nodules in the thin eyelid skin and are not good choices under the eyelid skin or brow tissues.
